Gone are the days where you need to carry around a hefty logbook and painstakingly record all the details of your drive. After all, you have all the latest technology at your fingertips. Apart from the obvious fact that the digital logbook is more efficient than the manual one, the question remains. Why now? Why did the RMS (Roads and Maritime Services) change the rules now? Well, the answer is simple. Fraud and forgery. I’m sure many of you know of people who’d faked the number of hours they’d driven – perhaps you yourself were even one of them. As much as it made lives easier by allowing them to reach P-Plater freedom even faster, it possessed an inherent risk.
Did you know that P-Platers (particularly those between 17 and 20) are twice as likely to be involved in fatal and injury crashes? And the idea of those crashes involving deaths is utterly horrific. Now imagine achieving that freedom to drive solo when you’re still a novice driver and don’t have the extra experience that would’ve come if you hadn’t faked your hours. What are the consequences?
CRASH! According to RMS stats, there’s been an increase in fatalities on the road due to these supposedly experienced provisional drivers. Now I’m sure you’ll protest and claim you’re a safe driver. Perhaps you believe you’re the one who’d miraculously avoid such incidents. And perhaps you’re right… But what if you’re not? After all, everyone hopes deep in their hearts that they’ll be the one to avoid such an incident as no one wants to imagine anything bad happening to them. However, digging your head into the sand does not mean you’re going to avoid potential incidents. In fact, incidents will be more likely – after all, you can’t see!
As year after year rolled by and the propensity to crash increased, even with the Graduated Licensing Scheme (GLS) introduced in 2000. The RMS decided that enough was enough. Cue: the digital log book app. One designed to allow L-Platers to make the most of their driving experience and achieve mastery.
L2P is an RMS endorsed app that is designed to allow you to create an accurate digital record of your driving experience. But it isn’t just a logbook, it’s a ‘smart’ logbook, with smart features to help YOU learn how to drive like a pro even faster. So what are these features?
- L2P app has a countdown that records how many hours you have left and how many of them need to be at night – after all, L platers need to have 20 hours of experience driving at night.
- Furthermore, it allows for real time tracking of your driving that you can access later. The app automatically records your route and distance while you have the opportunity to add in the traffic conditions and weather after your drive. You then submit the session and your supervisor should be all set to approve the session.
- If you have previous experience that you’ve written in a manual logbook, there’s no need to worry as you can manually type them into the app.
- There are 20 learning goals you must achieve to ensure you attain the ability to drive solo. The app gives information about each and you can work through them with your supervisors at your own pace.
All you need to do is link up with a supervisor on the L2P app and you’re ready to roll.
We want YOU to experience a comfortable ride as you coast along the road with your app. After all, we’re in the 21st century and if books are becoming digital – why not driving? This is the new age of the learner driver experience, where P-plater freedom can be attained with confidence and mastery.
